DIY Christmas

Hello faithful followers!  I realize we are into February already of the new year….how does time go by so fast??

Here are a few of my favorites I made this Christmas.

Lighted wine bottle

Lighted wine bottle

This wine bottle was one of my favorites this year!  There is only ONE type of wine that I like…thanks to my friend Chris.  I made this for her with the first big bottle we shared (up until October “our” wine was only available in smaller bottles).  With a special glass bit, my husband drilled a hole near the bottle- I fed in the lights, sprayed the bottle with frosted glass spray paint, and added the ornaments and bow…then made one for myself too! 🙂

Thanks to Pintrest, I found A LOT of things I wanted to make….photo vases were one of them.  I printed the picture on vellum and Mod Podged it to the vase.  Then I sprayed the rest of the vase with frosted glass paint and inserted a flameless votive.  Then, I needed a little something for my oldest daugther’s violin teacher…

I printed sheet music on vintage paper and did the same thing…it came out great!  I liked the look of the sheet music and made these little snowmen, too…a little brown ink around the edges to make it more vintage.

This year we took our Girl Scout troop to Designing Dish as part of our Potter badge.  The girls painted mugs and ornaments.  They were ready to take home in time for our Christmas party- I made these hot chocolate snowmen as a little something special.  Just baby food jars, dowel sections, felt, paint and, of course, hot chocolate mix and marshmallows!

I love the deluxe apples but not the price…so this year I made my own!  I covered large honey crisp apples with caramel then drizzled them with chocolate, toffee pieces and/or pecans.

Happy New Year!

Happy 2012!!  I hope everyone has a great year- wishing you all lots of love and happiness in the coming year!

We’ve started a new family tradition on New Year’s Eve-  3 years ago we went with friends ice skating; last year we wanted to go sledding with my sister and there was no snow on the hill so we went ice skating.  This year… we went ice skating!

Downtown Buffalo has an outdoor rink that’s free and that’s where we’ve gone the last 3 years.  It’s very close to where Buffalo does the ball drop so we usually get to see them setting things up.  Juli was very excited to skate this year (we put skates on her last year but as soon as her feet touched the ice she started crying and wanted to get off the ice).  It was only her second time on the ice (we went Thursday to Buff State’s open skate) but she was thrilled to be skating with the sisters.

The weather wasn’t the best- it was foggy and misty and damp but we wouldn’t let that stop us.  We skated for about an hour then took a ride on the Metro train- couldn’t go downtown without riding the train!  As we skated, we watched the tops of the buildings disappear as the mist settled down on us.

Merry Christmas!!!

All the preparations, all the baking, all the cooking, wrapping and traveling…all over for another year.  I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas- I sure did!!

The 2nd last day of school was Raelyn’s class party.  I went in a little early to read the class a Christmas book and my sister, who had the day off, came along to surprise Rae!  One mom sent in “blank” cut out cookies for the kids to decorate with frosting and sprinkles!  During the party each of the kids got a letter from Santa-

Christmas Eve we spend with my Dad’s side of the family.  His older brother and new bride, my 2 cousins, my Gram and my parents, sister, a friend of hers, and brother all gathered here for a Polish dinner of Polish sausage, homemade pierogies and kluskis and veggie dishes.  As a little surprise I made a “wedding” cake for Uncle Tom and Cathy.  They both own Harleys- so I made black and orange accents with a print out of a bride and groom with 2 bikes on top.  By no means am I a cake decorator- but I thought it was cute and it went over well!

This year the girls got matching Christmas pajamas on Christmas Eve.  I always get a pic of the girls in their matching jammies on the stairs, whether we are at home or at my sister’s house.  Well, this year, Juli wanted nothing to do with a picture!

This is a centerpiece that I put together-

Christmas morning- Santa came!!  The girls were sooo excited to see the piles of gifts under the tree!  My sister stayed overnight with us so she could see the girls open all their gifts.  I was very surprised and excited to get a Kindle Fire from my husband!!

Santa came!!

Every year we go to my parents’ house for breakfast and more presents!

Rae got a Glow Dome

Nina got a hat and a coat

Juli got a tee ball set

and much much more!

One of the gifts I made for my Mom and my Gram I can finally post!  I made them each a heat/cold pack filled with rice-

We returned home for a couple of hours to open a few new gifts then the girls dressed in their Christmas dresses and we head to my mom’s cousin’s house for Christmas with her side of the family.  After a nice turkey dinner, the kids opened a few more gifts and we spent a nice evening together

5 great grand daughters

Overall, it was a GREAT Christmas!

Holly Sprinkles

Well, Holly left with Santa on Christmas Eve night.  It was a fun 43 days with her!

The girls asked to get matching pajamas again this year on Christmas Eve.  I waited til the last minute to get them wrapped; Holly helped me out the best she could.  However, she forgot to label who got what package and the girls all opened the wrong sizes!

Please see Holly’s page for her last fews days of 2011 with us.  I’m sure we’ll see her again next year!
