An amazing site

Today, here near Buffalo, NY, it was -1°F with a wind chill of -19°…but the sun was out!! Seems like we haven’t seen the sun in a long time!  So, what else was there to do than to head outside and soak up the sun! LOL

Now, there has been a link going around on FB and other sites that Niagara Falls is frozen solid; it’s not true.  But, there is a lot of ice and the mist freezes in the air and coats everything in ice and feels like a hail storm.  The trees, lamp posts and railings are coated in ice and frozen snow.  It looks fluffy, but it’s frozen solid!

There was a lot of mist today so it was hard to see the actual falls; we headed over to the Canadian side to get a better view of the falls.

SNovember

Ok, so it’s been a while!  Every time I think I’m going to stay caught up, I realize it’s been MONTHS since I’ve posted!

Some of you may have seen the news that Buffalo got hit with a crazy lake effect snow storm last month- dubbed Snovember.  Where I live, we ended with an official total of 78″ of snow!  With 3-5” per hour, and it snowed for hours, we got buried!

We were woken up at 5am by a call from school saying it was closed..

I took pics every couple hours:

And it just kept snowing and piling up….then it fell

My husband worked hard to keep the driveway clear, so that when it did finally stop snowing, we wouldn’t be completely buried!  We woke up the next day to some sun, and lots of white!

We spent the day shoveling. More snow came and we shoveled some more. The plows finally came, well, not plows but payloaders and bulldozers, then the plows! Towns from the north sent their plows to help.  Neighbors helped neighbors shovel and those that could get out made trips for milk and bread for those still buried.

We finally saw the street on 11/21 and the driving bans were lifted.  First stop- Wegmans for some milk! (and essentials for the neighbors!)

Sunburn to Frostbite??

Well, it was a crazy weekend here near Buffalo, NY!  On Friday, April 20th we had almost 80° weather.  I was out in shorts and a tshirt and got some sunburn on my legs and arms.  It was my team’s first softball practice and at 6pm it was still 70°!  Hard to believe the news was calling for snow at the beginning of the week!

Sunday was not so nice.  It was my older daughter’s first softball practice.  It was 39° and breezy = COLD!!  Oh, and the sporatic drizzle didn’t help!   The weathermen were calling for even colder weather and 5-9” of snow by Tuesday!

And, of course, it didn’t pan out.  I don’t know how many times the weathermen called for significant snow this winter and we were way below average!  Well, we got a little slush…a total of .8 of an inch that melted by lunchtime.

My poor flowers didn’t like the icy slush!  Glad to say it’s going to be sunny for several days…now if it would just warm up again!

Snow in Buffalo!

Ok, snow in Buffalo, that’s nothing new, right?  In November 2000, we got 3 feet within 1 day, stranding LOTS of motorists including many school buses.  In December 2001 we got 7 feet over a 5 day period- snow was being trucked to Rochester because there was no where to put it. In 2006 we got blasted with the “October Storm”- an unpredicted storm that dropped over 2 feet of snow and caused power outages for thousands of people (for some up to 11 days) and downed LOTS of trees- the leaves hadn’t fallen yet and they caught all that falling snow and the trees couldn’t withstand the weight of the snow- clean up took months.  Last December (2010) the suburbs of Buffalo (in which I live) got over 3 feet of snow in 24 hours.  We have made nation weather news MANY years in a row!

However, this year, snow in January is something to talk about- up until yesterday we were 40 inches BELOW normal snowfall- we’ve only had a few dustings!  Sometime overnight it started to fall and it’s still falling.  The buses were very late this morning (my neighbor drove her girls and mine; good thing because the bus was 40 min late) and traffic was terrible; I stayed home.  All after school activities are canceled; except my girls take ice skating lessons through the town so I do have to go out eventually.  Because of that I figured I should go shovel; the plow did go by and I didn’t want to get stuck at the end of my driveway.  Stupid wind is causing crazy drifts- one side of my driveway has about 2 inches of snow and goes up to almost a foot on the other side!  Oh, did I mention the bottom is a layer of slush from yesterday’s rain?  That and the wind made for miserable shoveling.  I am just now getting the feeling back in my legs and face.  Snow is ok.  Wind chill is not.  Slush is awful.  And the crap the plow pushes across the end of the driveway is the worst!  🙂 And in a little over an hour I will voluntarily be sitting next to an ice rink watching my daugthers twill around on frozen water.

Here’s a quick shot of  my 20° snow covered back yard; yesterday it was a swamp from the 45° rain!                                                                                                                              “You might live in Buffalo if you get sunburned and frostbite in the same week”- gotta love Buffalo!

And as I get ready to publish this post, I hear the plow go by, again.  So, I guess I’m going to shovel, again.  Ugh.

Stay warm and have a great weekend!

Playing in the “snow”

It’s December 28th and we now have about 1/4 of an inch of snow on the ground.  It’s our 3rd snowfall of the season- we’ve gotten about 1/2 in each time and it lasted about 3 hours then the lawns were green again.  This is Buffalo we’re talking about!  Buffalo, NEW YORK!  Last year we made the national weather channel because Mother Nature dumped 3 1/2 feet on our town in 24 hours!

Anyway, this has not made for happy kids.  A green Christmas, no snow for snowmen, snowballs, sledding…so today the kids begged to go out and play.  The snow has lasted more than a few hours because it’s 22 degrees outside.

Juli made snow angels on the deck- the grass is more green than white.  It’s sad that the girls are excited over our pathetic little snowfall!  lol
